Outstanding!: I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few important people from our classroom who have displayed characteristics of Be Nice, Work Hard and Learn Well. In November, Alaina was recognized for her example of thoughtfulness, kindness and hard work. In December, Mirielle was an up-stander and encourager to a friend on the bus. Recently, in January, Mathis’ individual actions of perseverance and positive attitude as a learner and towards others helped our class receive another “Outstanding.”
“Thank you,” Alaina, Mirielle, and Mathis for representing our class through your good example. Congratulations and thank you!
Here’s what we’ve been studying in Fourth Grade!
Math: Unit 4: Equations and Word Problems – We have begun by learning about Situational and Solution Equations, as well as applying our knowledge of and use of Comparison Bars to help us with story problems. The children are learning how to locate key words and interpret the information to help determine if they are to add, subtract, multiply or divide. Some questions can be complex, so the homework sheets are a helpful way to practice and reinforce their learning.
Reading: Non-Fiction Text – We are currently reading non-fiction text and are learning how these types of books are set up, and how to develop skills and habits essential for informational reading.
Writing: Literary Essays – We are reading wonderful short stories like “The Marble Champ,” and “The Stray” and are learning how to read and think about what the big idea of the story is. This big idea then jump starts our learning and writing practice of a literary essay and its structure.
Science: We are beginning a new science curriculum in Hudsonville called, “Phenomenal Science.” A letter was sent home with your child earlier in the week explaining a little bit about this new program. The children and I are very excited to dive into the lessons. Hopefully they have shared with you about our thoughtful investigations of the Venus Flytrap, as well as our observations of plants and their structures. We are eager to share our questions with one another and to learn more!
