senses five
Science: Our unit on the 5 senses continued this week with the help of  a special visitor to our class who helped us use, and learn more about, our sense of hearing.  Mrs. Bier, a Zeeland Middle School Band Director, and Kate’s mom, stopped by with a few instruments to put our hearing to the test!  Needless to say, Kate was so very excited and beamed at her mom with pride. So very precious!! Image may be NSFW.

Mrs. Bier shared and played for us a flute, trumpet and snare drum.  All very different in their sounds!  We learned, listened, and discussed about sounds that were low, high, soft, and loud.  We listened for patterns, and repeated a few, as well as discussed how certain sounds can remind of us something.  We also noticed discussed how vibration creates sound!  Thank you, Mrs. Bier, for sharing your time and helping us to understand more about our sense of hearing!

This week we tested our sense of smell as well!  From cinnamon to orange, to coffee to onion, we had a variety of scents to figure out, and there was no fooling these Kindergartners!

We also made wonderful connections to our 5 senses while enjoying our special pizza party, thanks to our local Jet’s Pizza and all of you who ordered pizza during our last Jet’s Pizza fundraising nights. The children had a step-by-step opportunity to be food scientists and attempt to use all of their senses.  They did an amazing job of using descriptive words to describe how the pizza looked, smelled, sounded (when the crust crunched), felt, and most importantly, tasted!  It opened their eyes to a whole new way to look at their pizza!  Learning is fun!!!

Math
:  This week we completed Unit 1 with an assessment test inside of our special “offices.”  I am in the process of correcting these and am excited to share them with you during our Parent Teacher Conferences.   We are now beginning Unit #2, which will continue with numbers 1-5, but will also branch out into numbers 6-10. A letter to parents arrived home this week sharing how the children are learning how to break down a number with manipulatives for a deeper understanding using a 5-group.

Writing Workshop
:  We have so many personal stories to share and our writer’s workshop time is the perfect place to do it!  We have begun learning how to tell our stories with a beginning, middle and an end.  A fun way to do this is by telling our stories across our fingers.  We are writing these stories across 3 pages and stapling them into mini-booklets, and continue to use our ABC charts to help us locate the letters of the sounds we hear.  The children are off to a great start!  I am SO proud of them!

Handwriting
:  We completed our lessons for learning how to form our Frog Jump Letters (F, E, D, P, B, N, M).  All these letters have in common that they begin with a long first line down, followed by a “frog jump” back up to the top before creating the remainder of their letters.  Please encourage continued practice for your child, as this will help them to gain confidence, and apply their knowledge, when writing these letters independently.

Super Stars
:  We have begun our second round of Super Stars and the latest show-and-tell is to bring in a stuffed animal.  We are learning how to develop our questioning skills and the children are very excited to have the chance to be Super Star for a second time. Image may be NSFW.

Mystery Reader
:  Claire’s eyes lit up when she saw her mom, Mrs. Pepper, entered into our classroom as the Mystery Reader this week! Mrs. Pepper shared with us a Halloween favorite titled, “The Littlest Pumpkin,” by R. A. Herman.  It was a sweet book that reminded us wishes can come true, just maybe not in the way we expected.  Thank you, Mrs. Pepper, for visiting and sharing your book with us!
