Clik here to view.Martin Luther King, Jr.: We read the story of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr, from his birth to his dream speech for equality (please note, I chose to not share the last part of his life with our Kindergartners), and discussed how our differences are what makes us each special and wonderful. We each had the opportunity to share our dreams for the future and how we can help to make our world a better place. The ideas and suggestions that the children shared were very thoughtful.

Clik here to view.A Special Visitor: This week we welcomed a special visitor, and Hudsonville High School graduate, named Mr. Pluger. Mr. Pluger came to see and learn about some of the many things we learn and do in Kindergarten. During his high school years, he learned how to speak Mandarine Chinese and shared with us how to say a few words like “hello,” “boy,” and “girl.” We quickly found out that it was very different from our language, especially how they write with pictures instead of letters!! After college, Mr. Pluger had the opportunity to live, speak, and work in China. While there, he helped to teach Kindergarten aged children. Our class enjoyed listening to Mr. Pluger share about his life, and we especially enjoyed looking at the map to see and learn how far and long his travels were. Thank you, Mr. Pluger for visiting! We enjoyed meeting you and wish you a great time on your next return visit to China!

Clik here to view.Science: Simple Machines are so helpful! We read and learned about how they make work much easier. We looked at and found springs, gears, ramps, levers and pullys. It was neat to see and make the connection that we have many simple machines all around us, especially on the playground!

Clik here to view.Writer’s Workshop: We are completing our unit on Small Moments stories, making sure that they contain a “beginning, middle and end.” We recently learned how our feelings can really make our stories interesting and enjoyed trying to figure out which sentence stopper (. ! ?) is the best fit at the end of our sentences.

Clik here to view.Math: The children have worked hard at creating teen numbers this week by adding a number(1-9) to a group of 10 (the children refer to this as a 10-group). They are becoming quick with their calculating and enjoy using fast finger flashes to display their answer. We completed the week with our unit test.

Clik here to view.Mystery Reader: Mrs. Meyers gave her daughter, Ashlan, a pleasant surprise when she walked through our door as the Mystery Reader. Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view. Mrs. Meyers shared a brand new book with us that even Ashlan had never seen. It was called, “Stuck,” by Oliver Jeffers and it had a great cover illustration with the title stuck in a tree. We soon realized how that was a clue as to what would happen in the story. The class all found it hilarious to see the many things that Floyd would get stuck up in a tree. At the end we began to wonder did that really happen, or was Floyd dreaming? Thank you, Mrs. Meyers for sharing with us such a fun story!
