walk a thonWalk-A-Thon: The weather was beautiful and the kids enjoyed walking on the track with their classmates! 🙂 Thank you to our PTC for finding a way to make our walk-a-thon possible this year, and a big thank you to all of you for your financial donations!  Your generosity helped to raise $26,000 for our school!!

SOAR Mission! We went on a mission to determine the best ways to SOAR at school. During our mission, we located a few clues and met up with a couple interesting detectives! It was a fun way to kick off our year and we are determined to accept all missions to SOAR each and every day!

Here’s what we’ve been studying:

Math: Unit 2 is underway, and we’ve been busy multiplying using arrays and area models. The class is quickly realizing how helpful it is to know our multiplication facts.  *Please offer your child the opportunity to access the Clever site (a link is located right here on our class blog under “For Students,” and “Technology for Kids”). Once your child logs onto Clever, they can access their Moby Max account and practice their Multiplication facts.  Thanks for encouraging them and please let me know if you need any help.

Writing Workshop: We are beginning our Realistic Fiction unit in writing. We are understanding how to develop and create a fictional character and conflict, as well as the importance of a good lead.

Reading Workshop: We are continuing our read-aloud of “The Tiger Rising,” by Kate DiCamillo.  We have learned ways to read intensely, and are now growing ideas about our characters. It’s neat to find patterns within our characters, or see how we can sometimes change our thoughts and perceptions about them.

Important Reminders:

* Warm clothing: The weather is definitely cooling down. Please be sure to label the tags of your child’s fall/winter outerwear with you last name. This will help a lot should they misplace it. 😉

*Early Release Day: We will dismiss at 12:15pm this Friday, Oct. 23. Please let your child know if you would like them to order a sack lunch that day.

*No School: We will not have school on Monday, Oct. 26.

*Homework: Read a minimum of 20 minutes every night.  Remember to log the time and pages on your reading log.

*Book-It Calendar: Since your child is already reading each night, please encourage them to log their time on their Book-It calendar. Their hard work will pay off in a coupon for a Personal Pan Pizza at the end of month.  Be sure to total the weekly/monthly time and return it to school at the end of the month. It will be exciting to see how many minutes they will have read each month!

*Math Homework: Please continue to encourage your child to independently try their personal best and return it the following day to school.

*Picture Retake Day: Tuesday, Nov. 3.

*Fall Party: Fri., Oct. 30.  Costumes are welcome to be worn to school (No weapons, blood or gore) but please make sure your child can manage throughout the day while learning. (Please see email sent last week for specific details).

Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!
