Bus Training: The big yellow school bus came to visit us at school, and we got to meet two very nice bus drivers named Ms. Hill and Ms. Randolf. They explained to us about bus safety both on and off the bus, taught us the 4B’s (bottom, bottom, back, back), told us what the red sign and smiley signs meant, and gave us a chance to practice how to safely cross the street and know how to look for clues as to when it is alright to do so. The best part was being able to practice our skills and take a ride together as a class! Thank you, Ms. Hill and Ms. Randolf, for coming to Georgetown to teach us!
Cool Tools & Anti-Bullying: This week we continued our cool tools lessons. Information regarding each arrived home with your child throughout this past week. The children enjoyed the stories and now have a personal collection of “tools” in their hearts to help them have great days both in and out of school. Thank you for your support with this important topic at home, and for signing and returning your child’s Georgetown “Be Nice, Be Safe” Contract at the start of the school year. Below are a few photos of our class enjoying an ice cube activity when learning how to cool down or chill out.
Math: We are learning to recognize the numbers and values up to 5. We have also learned the proper formation for writing the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3. Poems for each number help us to learn them easily. Have fun practicing with your child!
0=Around and around we go, that’s the way to make a zero!
1=Straight line down, then we’re done, that’s the way to make a one!
2=Around and back on the railroad track, two, two, two!
3=Around a tree, around a tree, that’s the way to make a three!
Mini Books and Color Songs: In your child’s home folder you will find their Red Mini-Book. The children enjoyed learning and making these and are excited to bring them home to read to you. Please help your child build their collection by storing them as they arrive home with your child in the upcoming weeks. Their Red Color Song also came home this week, and I encourage you to help your child to save them to read and practice. Please ask them to read/sing it to you! Thank you for your help in building this beginning collection of independent reading resources for your child. Reading is fun!
Walk-A-Thon: This Friday, September 23, is our school fundraiser. Please have your child come ready to walk in comfy shoes and they are welcome to dress in Red, White and Blue, to celebrate the Constitution. You can find out more about the Walk-A-Thon event here.
Mystery Reader: Mrs. Cooley, Georgetown’s ELL Teacher was our surprise Mystery Reader this week! She works with students who speak different languages and shared with us the French Story titled, “Le Canard Fermier” (The Duck Farmer), by Martin Waddell and Helen Oxenbury. The class thought it was fascinating to hear Mrs. Cooley speak French, and they thought it was so cool that Tom (a student in our class) could understand her! Mrs. Cooley also showed us a second book titled, “Am I Small,” by Philip Winterberg. This book was written in Arabic, and the children were so surprised to see that the writing of letters looked so different than they way they are learning in school. It was fun for Iskandar to share a little about his Jordanian family. Thank you, Mrs. Cooley for sharing these two books and languages with our class!
