Social Studies and Writing Workshop:  This week, we worked on the concept of list making. We made a list of items we would want to bring if we were Pilgrims on the Mayflower. It was also a great connection to our recent unit on “Wants and Needs.”  Having learned and read about the Pilgrims, why they had left England and what life was like for them on the Mayflower and after they arrived, gave us a great connection to apply to writing their list.  They enjoyed learning how to draw the Mayflower ship in class (and were so attentive!).  Their creations were impressive!   Image may be NSFW.

We also connected our learning of the first Thanksgiving by researching information about turkeys.  We learned about what turkeys have, can and are, and created a final book with facts that we knew and learned.  Be sure to ask your child what they can share with you about a turkey.  They were quite fascinated by its wattle!

Reading Workshop
:  We continued learning and using our reading strategies to help us be Super Readers! I am so impressed by how the boys and girls are being conscious about what strategies they could possibly use to help them decode words, like Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake.  Chunky Monkey is a new favorite of many, where they look for smaller “chunks” within words to help them read it.

Math
:  We saw patterns when creating numbers one through ten, used 5-groups to help us make numbers and count them quickly, and practiced the concept of adding 1 and subtracting by X’ing off.  Shape work and recognition was also reviewed.  Thank you for your continued support with math homework.  We are feeling ready for upcoming Unit 2 test!

Mystery Reader
: Taleah sped so fast to her mom when she arrived to our classroom door!  Mrs. VandePol was our Mystery Reader this week, and she shared the book, “Tippu Joins In,” by Jane Carruth.  The story was actually one that Mrs. VandePol received as a little girl from her grandparents when she was 4 years old!  Thank you, Mrs. VandePol, for stopping by to visit us as a Mystery Reader and for sharing your childhood favorite book with us!  Image may be NSFW.
