Ice Day + School Wide Reading Incentive: This week we were surprised to have school cancelled by an Ice Day! The weather outside was not what we expected, so Georgetown students made the most of their time at home by reading. Many of our Kindergartners enjoyed reading on Raz-Kids! Our principal, Mrs. Reagan, announced winners at each grade level for a gift card to Barnes and Noble. The Kindergarten winner was Tom from our class! Click here to see all the winners. Congratulations Tom!
Reading Workshop: We have been learning how to get ready as readers by looking at the cover and titles of books as a way to think and make predictions about what the book will be about. We realized that when we go on picture walks and look at the illustrations within a book, we can get lots of information to help us as readers. The pictures give us great clues to help us figure out how to decode words in the story.
Writing Workshop: We are learning and working on writing Personal Narratives, also known as Small Moments. The children are growing as writers and are doing a fabulous job of zooming in on a small moment and writing about what happened first, next, and last. They are also editing their work to make sure that have included spaces between words, sentence stoppers (. ! ?), as well as including detailed drawings with labels. I am so very proud of our Kindergartners!!
Handwriting: This week, we learned and practiced the formation of the lowercase letters “i, e, l and k.”
Take Home Book Program: Thank you to all of the people who have shown an interest in helping with our Take Home Book Program! This program will be a success thanks to the volunteers who come in to allow the children the opportunity to read aloud. Your child’s labeled bag with information arrived home on Friday. Please review it with your child and return the bag with book each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I am excited to begin this program next week!
Raz-Kids: Remember to offer your child access to this great online reading resource and experience with appropriate fitting books for your Kindergartner. If you have misplaced your child’s online code/password or have any questions that I can assist with, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Mystery Reader: Kennedi was so very surprised and filled with pride and love when she saw her dad walk into our classroom as our Mystery Reader! Mr. Williams, also known as Deputy Williams from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, shared a little about his uniform and important job. We enjoyed listening to him read the book, “Police Officers on Patrol,” by Kersten Hamilton. We learned that when people need help, police officers are always there for us. Thank you Deputy Williams for reading to us and protecting us each day!
Super Stars for the Week Were: Kathryn, Claire, Drake and Paxton!
This week we began an new round of Super Stars! The children enjoyed bringing in a favorite picture book and having it read to our class. The stories they shared were,”Not a Box,” by Antoinette Portis, “Pete The Cat Too Cool For School,” by James Dean, “Five Spooky Ghosts Playing Tricks At School,” by Steve Metzger, and “The Day the Crayons Quit,” by Drew Daywalt.
