Martin Luther King, Jr.: We read the story of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr, from his birth to his dream speech for equality (please note, I chose to not share the last part of his life with our Kindergartners), and discussed how our differences are what makes us each special and wonderful. We each had the opportunity to share our dreams for the future and how we can help to make our world a better place. The ideas and suggestions that the children shared were very thoughtful.
Science: Simple Machines are so helpful! We read and learned about how they make work much easier. We looked at and found springs, gears, ramps, levers and pullys. It was neat to see and make the connection that we have many simple machines all around us, especially on the playground!
Handwriting: This week, we learned and practiced the formation of the lowercase letters: “y,” “j” and “p.”
Math: The children have worked hard at creating teen numbers this week by adding a number(1-9) to a group of 10 (the children refer to this as a 10-group). They are becoming quick with their calculating and enjoy using fast finger flashes to display their answer. We completed the week with our unit test.
Mystery Reader: Mrs. Purwin gave her daughter, Macy, a pleasant surprise when she walked through our door as the Mystery Reader.
Mrs. Purwin shared a favorite by Mo Willems called, “The Pigeon Needs a Bath!” The class thought it was funny how the Pigeon thought he didn’t need a bath even when he had stinky smells lines around him. In the end, he actually enjoyed bathing so much that he did not want to get out of the tub (some kids could relate to that!). Thank you, Mrs. Purwin for sharing with us such a funny story!
Super Stars for the Week Were: Macy, Iskandar, Sophia, Cassie and Kendall!
More wonderful picture books were shared by our Super Stars this week! These stories were,”Shiver Me Letters,” by June Sobel, “Sneezy The Snowman,” by Maureen Wright, “Quick As A Cricket,” by Audrey Wood, “Petting Zoo,” by Gail Tuchman, and “Let’s Look!” Baby Einstein, by Michael P. Furtig. Each book was so different, we listened and looked for letters, we made predictions through rhyme, we used our imagination, we learned cool facts, and we hunted to match clues. We loved each of the stories you picked!! Thank you!
Popcorn Words For The Week Were: “he,” “she”
